Screeners Not Satisfied with Arbitration Award!

Toronto, ON – Airport Security Screeners employed by Garda Security in Toronto, represented by the IAM finally have their first collective agreement and the feelings are mixed. They opted for binding voluntary arbitration to settle outstanding issues in their collective agreement. The arbitration decision award issued this week failed to satisfy everybody.
“The arbitrator handed down a money-based award that gives Screeners a greater percentage increase in wages and more money in the pension contribution than we were originally offered in the rejected tentative agreement,” explain IAM District Lodge 140 General Chairperson Lou Pagrach. “However many members were very disappointed that their first year increase was not a lump sum payment nor was it retro-active.”
The three-year agreement provides wage increases of 1 per cent as of November 1, 2012, 2.5 per cent in the second year and 2.5 per cent in the third year. Other agreement highlights include :
· One additional sick day
· Pension contributions increased to $ .75 per hour
· Combined COLA (Cost of Living Allowance) and VRSC (Volume Risk Stress and Consequences) rate increased by $ .13 per hour
· Premium increases for Team Leader categories
The 1800 members of IAM Local Lodge 2921 provide airport security screening services at Pearson International Airport and Billy Bishop Island Airport in Toronto. The IAM is the largest screeners union in Canada.
