Senate misses opportunity to protect workers’ rights in Bill C-10
The IAM is extremely disappointed in the results of the Senate decision as part of committee stage of Bill C-10, an Act to Amend the Air Canada Public Participation Act. The Standing committee of Transport and Communications discussed the bill without accepting any of the amendments put forward by the IAM.
As part of the IAM Bill C-10 campaign, a delegation first lobbied MPs sitting on the Transportation Committee and has been back in Ottawa this week to lobby Senators on the Standing committee of Transport and Communications, and others. We did so in the belief that we could make a difference.
The fact that the Senate did not amend the bill shows us that Senate chose the path of a corporate driven agenda. By doing so, the committee did not take into account the national interest or the interest of our members. Corporate profits appear to have won over the public good and the good of Canadian workers.
The bill is now sent back to the Senate for third reading and we hope that the chamber of sober second thought will amend the bill to preserve jobs and secure the Canadian MRO industry.
