IAM Human Rights Conference: Breaking Barriers in Atlanta

The IAM Human Rights Conference in Atlanta was a powerful event centered on equity, inclusion, and breaking down barriers in workplaces and communities. Union members from across North America gathered to reaffirm the IAM’s leadership in the human rights movement.

Day 1 featured an opening performance reenacting the Washerwoman Strike of 1881, speeches from IAM leaders including International President Brian Bryant and General Secretary-Treasurer Dora Cervantes, and a panel on building a stronger movement. Breakout sessions covered solidarity, mobilization, belonging, and storytelling.

Day 2 brought impactful speeches from union leaders, activists, and academics. A highlight was the emotional panel on immigration justice, where members shared personal stories of detention and resilience. The day closed with key “marching orders”: defend human rights, celebrate wins, and bring lessons home.

Day 3 wrapped up with keynote addresses from high-profile speakers such as Stacey Abrams, Yvonne Brooks, Evelyn DeJesus, and leaders from multiple labour and community organizations. Quotes underscored that human rights are non-negotiable, inseparable from union rights, and essential for justice. The conference concluded with a cultural reception, awards, and a celebration of IAM’s diversity and solidarity.

Overall, the conference emphasized that IAM is not only defending workers’ rights but also standing at the forefront of the human rights movement, fighting racism, sexism, ageism, and discrimination while building bridges for a more inclusive future.
