Our Story
Founded in 1888, with its first Canadian local established in 1890, the International Association of Machinists (IAM) Canada has been a cornerstone of the labour movement, fighting for workers’ rights when long hours, dangerous conditions, and low wages were the norm.
From its early days, IAM stood up for fairness, pushing for better wages, job security, and the right to organize.
What began as a small group of machinists advocating for change has since grown into one of Canada’s largest and most influential unions, with 50,000 members across the country and 600,000 across North America. IAM Canada proudly represents workers in critical industries like aerospace, transportation, manufacturing, healthcare, public services and more
Over the years, IAM has played a crucial role in shaping labour laws, improving workplace safety, and championing social justice. With a deep history of organizing workers and negotiating collective agreements, IAM Canada remains a leading force in the protection and advancement of Canadian workers’ rights.
Today, IAM Canada continues to build on its legacy, striving for a fairer, safer, and more just world for workers.
