Absolute solidarity with our Sisters and Brothers in Oshawa
Toronto, ON – “This is devastating news for a community that relies upon these good middle-class jobs to support their families,” said IAM Canadian General Vice President regarding the announcement by GM, Canada that it would close its Oshawa assembly plant.
Media reports began circulating over the weekend that GM would be closing its Oshawa assembly lines which builds Chevrolet Impala and Cadillac models. The closure at the end of 2019 would cost more than 2,500 jobs. While GM isn’t ruling out the possibility of retooling the facility, it hasn’t said much other than to confirm production of the current product line will end in 2019.
“We stand in absolute Solidarity with our Sisters and Brothers at GM in Oshawa,” said Pickthall.
The IAM represents workers at numerous automotive parts manufacturers and there is no indication that a closure of GM in Oshawa would impact on their jobs.
