Stampede Machinists Have New Agreement!

Calgary, AB – Maintenance workers, Equipment operators and Labourers employed by the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede Limited, members of IAMAW Local Lodge 99 have won their first collective agreement.
“It was working conditions and respect on the job not money that powered the original organizing drive and this first set of negotiations,” explained IAMAW District Lodge 14 Business Representative Kevin Clark. “Imagine in this modern day and age working 40 hours a week for 15 years but never considered full time by your employer. For the first time, these people will receive two consecutive days off when most working Canadians take it for granted. This contract is a major victory for these workers. As well, we were able to negotiate the return to work of an incorrectly laid off worker.”
The 26-month agreement provides varying wage increases for most in 2011, then 2 per cent in 2012 and 2013 respectively. Other agreement highlights include :
• Just cause protection
• Layoff language
• Seniority provisions
• Two consecutive days off
• Changes to shift schedule now require 72 hour notification
IAMAW, among the largest industrial trade unions in North America, represents more than 700,000 active and retired members, and administers more than 5,000 contracts in transportation, woodworking, aerospace, manufacturing and defense related industries.
