The Federal Budget – Not on Target!
Ottawa, ON – “This is a government that follows through on its promises,” says Federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau during the deliverance of his latest budget! A close look at this budget reveals that’s not quite true.
On the vital issue of National Pharmacare, Morneau did nothing other than appoint former Ontario Health Minister Eric Hoskins as the new chair of the Advisory Council on the Implementation of National Pharmacare.
On the issue of pay equity, the Liberals promise to introduce pro-active pay equity legislation but it gave no timetable.
But the budget did address items of interest to Canadian workers. The government will encourage women to pursue careers in male-dominated – and better paid – Red Seal trades. The Government is allocating $19.9 million over five years, starting in 2019, to pilot an Apprenticeship Incentive Grant for Women.
Regarding the protection of Air Travellers or in laymen terms, shorter security lineups at airports, the budget allocates more money for additional airport security screeners at Billy Bishop Toronto City airport and Quebec City.
